Researcher Joana Rosa (S2AQUAcoLAB) embarked on a field trip with the Real Atunara team to closely observe traditional fishing practices and assess possible synergies with the INOVACEL project.
The main objective of this visit was to study opportunities for integrating by-products and marine biomass into the cellular aquaculture value chain. Collecting samples and observing waste and effluent flows from fishing activities can help identify promising raw materials for the formulation of innovative culture media.
Collaboration with industry is another of INOVACEL’s core areas of focus, which aims to promote knowledge transfer between research and local economic agents. This action reinforces the project’s commitment to integrated and sustainable practices, leveraging local resources to create global solutions.

The meeting provided an opportunity to review progress across the project, including ongoing work on marine cell line development, microalgae-based alternatives for animal components in cell culture media, and the reuse and valorisation of the spent culture media within a circular economy approach. Key results achieved so far were discussed, fostering technical alignment and shared reflection among partners.
