Necton is the company promoting the INOVACEL project. With its extensive know-how in microalgae biotechnology, it will be involved in supplying microalgae biomass and optimizing production processes, integrating its advanced cultivation systems and industrial-scale production capacity. Necton has a state-of-the-art production facility consisting of 5 tubular photobioreactors with a total capacity of >100 m³ and a raceway with 200 m³. In 2023, Necton acquired Allmicroalgae S.A., one of Europe’s largest microalgae producers.

CCMAR – the Algarve Marine Science Center – is part of the INOVACEL project as a partner specializing in marine scientific research, with a strong focus on biotechnology applied to cellular aquaculture.
Your contribution will focus on the development and characterization of cell lines from aquatic organisms and the evaluation of alternative microalgae-based sera with the potential to replace animal serum. CCMAR will also evaluate the use of microalgae for the bioremediation of the culture medium used in cell biomass production, and support scientific dissemination and the preparation of technical reports.
These tasks are led by the BIOSKEL group, which has experience in creating fish cell models and identifying bioactive compounds derived from microalgae. alternatives based on microalgae and bioremediation of culture media. It also supports scientific dissemination and the preparation of technical reports through the BIOSKEL group.

S2AQUAcoLAB is part of the INOVACEL project as a scientific partner, with extensive experience in the fields of cellular aquaculture and marine biotechnology.. His contribution focuses on the development and application of skills in cell culture, molecular biology, and process innovation aligned with the principles of the circular bioeconomy, promoting sustainable solutions for the cellular aquaculture sector.
Senior researcher
Responsible for coordinating S2AQUAcoLAB’s participation in the project. Coordinates the cell culture laboratory and leads research activities in cellular aquaculture.
Scientific coordinator
Specialist in cellular and molecular biology applied to aquaculture, with strong involvement in national and international projects and scientific dissemination.
Senior researcher
Coordinates the molecular biology and genetics laboratory. Develops protocols for gene expression analysis and molecular identification in species relevant to aquaculture.
Molecular biology technique
Focuses on optimizing molecular methodologies, including cryopreservation assays and the analysis of biomarkers of physiological stress and growth in marine organisms.
Cell culture technique
Works in the characterization and maintenance of marine cell lines, contributing to the development and improvement of in vitro cultivation strategies.
GreenCoLAB (Green Ocean Association – Collaborative Laboratory for the Development of Green Ocean Technologies and Products) comprises a collaborative platform between research and industry, basing its Research and Innovation Agenda on the exploitation of macro and microalgae as an essential and sustainable component for the human and animal food industry, agriculture, nutraceuticals, cosmetics, bioremediation, and CO₂ sequestration.. Comprising research centers, universities, and leading companies, GreenCoLab promotes the acceleration of productive innovation and economic growth in the sector by developing products, services, and other innovative applied solutions through algae biotechnology.
General coordinator
With over 15 years of experience in algae biotechnology, he leads GreenCoLab’s strategic contribution to the project. Specialist in industrial algae production, biorefinery, and prototyping of new products.
Bioprocess leader
Specialist in the cultivation of microorganisms and development of innovative processes with a focus on circularity and sustainability. Responsible for coordinating GreenCoLab activities.
Sustainability leader
Specialist in Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), Techno-Economic Analysis (TEA), and the application of algae for environmental services. Contributes to the environmental assessment and sustainability of the solutions developed.
Biorefinery leader
Specialist in the development of biorefinery processes and technologies for the sustainable production of new products and waste recovery. Contributes to the formulation of algae-derived ingredients with potential use in cell culture.
Chemistry platform manager
With extensive experience in instrumental chemical analysis (HPLC, UPLC, GC), it ensures the detailed characterization of bioactive compounds derived from algae.
Investigation technician
With experience in process sustainability analysis, he contributes to the assessment and quantification of the environmental impacts and economic performance of the processes developed.
