This project, which brings together PhytoBloom – Microalgae by Necton, Centre of Marine Sciences (CCMAR), S2AQUAcoLAB and GreenCoLab, is developing a serum derived from microalgae to replace the traditional fetal bovine serum used in cell cultivation. It already shows a promising rate of success allowing the production of fish cell lines in an ethical and sustainable way.

The meeting provided an opportunity to review progress across the project, including ongoing work on marine cell line development, microalgae-based alternatives for animal components in cell culture media, and the reuse and valorisation of the spent culture media within a circular economy approach. Key results achieved so far were discussed, fostering technical alignment and shared reflection among partners.
