INOVACEL presents cellular aquaculture research at international conference in Brazil
The INOVACEL project participated in the II Cell Ag & III COAP, held from 13 to 16 October 2026 at the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG) in Belo Horizonte, Brazil.
Organised by Cell Ag Brazil, the event brought together researchers, experts and industry representatives to discuss scientific developments, technological challenges and future perspectives in cellular agriculture.
INOVACEL was represented by Joana Rosa, researcher at S2AQUAcoLAB, who presented the consortium’s work on developing new tools for cellular aquaculture, with a particular focus on marine fish cell lines and microalgae-based solutions.
In her presentation, entitled “Building Tools for Cultivated Seafood: CellBloom Microalgae Serum for the Cultivation of Fish Cell Lines”, Joana Rosa shared research findings covering three complementary areas: the development of marine fish cell lines, the formulation of alternatives to fetal bovine serum and the upcycling of cell culture effluents using microalgae.
One of the main highlights was CellBloom, a microalgae-derived alternative to fetal bovine serum. This supplement is being developed and optimised within the project, with the aim of reducing reliance on animal-derived components in cell culture media.
The research also addressed the recovery and valorisation of effluents generated during fish cell cultivation. These effluents may still contain valuable nutrients and are being investigated for use in microalgae cultivation. The resulting biomass could, in turn, contribute to the development of new cell culture formulations. This approach aims to promote resource recovery and the application of circular economy principles.
Participation in the conference provided an opportunity to share INOVACEL’s scientific and technological progress with the international cellular agriculture community, encouraging knowledge exchange and discussion of new approaches to cultivated seafood development.
